When herringbone is the right choice
- You want the floor to stand out. Herringbone looks high-quality and prestigious, especially in the living room, hallway, and older buildings.
- You want a parquet look without parquet maintenance. Vinyl is waterproof, more scratch-resistant, and significantly easier to maintain.
- The room is rather small. A herringbone pattern laid lengthwise visually stretches the room.
- You are also renovating the kitchen or bathroom. Unlike wood parquet, herringbone vinyl easily withstands moisture.
What you should look out for with herringbone vinyl
Plan your waste correctly. As a rule, 5 to 10% waste is sufficient, just like with straight installation. In small or angular rooms, use the higher value because the pattern is cut more often at the edges. How to calculate this for your room is explained in the guide How much waste you should plan for.
Pay attention to A and B planks. A true herringbone pattern requires mirror-image plank pairs. For most series, both are already included in the package; if in doubt, just ask, and we will check this for your desired decor.
The subfloor must be level. This applies to all vinyl; however, with herringbone, unevenness is more noticeable due to the many short joints. How to check this is explained in the guide Leveling compound for vinyl flooring.
Herringbone by brand

- Moduleo Herringbone, LayRed and Roots Herringbone.
- Forbo Allura, the largest selection of glue-down vinyl.
- Chevron Vinyl, the French variant at a 60-degree angle.
Frequently asked questions about herringbone vinyl
How much does herringbone vinyl flooring cost per m²?
The range extends from affordable entry-level decors to high-quality branded floors with a thick wear layer. You can see the current m² price directly on the product, and the requirement calculator will determine the appropriate number of packages for you.
How much waste should I plan for herringbone?
As a rule, 5 to 10% is sufficient. In small or angular rooms, go for 10% because the pattern is cut more frequently at the edges of the room.
Can I install herringbone vinyl myself?
Yes, with a little patience. The key is the first row: if it is perfectly angled, the rest will follow the pattern. You can find the complete step-by-step guide in the article Installing herringbone pattern vinyl flooring.
Click or glue-down for herringbone?
Click vinyl is faster and is the safe choice for a rental apartment. Glue-down vinyl has a lower profile and is more stable—a real advantage given the many short joints of a herringbone pattern. More on this in the comparison Click vinyl or glue-down vinyl.
Is herringbone vinyl suitable for the bathroom?
Yes, vinyl is 100% waterproof and therefore suitable for the bathroom and kitchen. In the bathroom, we recommend glue-down vinyl and professional edge sealing.
