Why choose vinyl for the bathroom instead of tile?
- Warm underfoot: No cold floor in the morning, and it conducts warmth quickly if you have underfloor heating.
- Waterproof: The planks do not swell, even if water splashes onto them.
- Renovate without demolition: Vinyl can be laid directly over old tiles—no chiseling, no debris.
- Quiet and comfortable: Softer and quieter than ceramic, even when barefoot.
- Few joints: Fewer places where limescale and dirt can accumulate.
Glue-down or click vinyl for the bathroom?
Glue-down vinyl is the safest solution for the bathroom. It lies flat across the entire surface, has no click joints, and is very low-profile starting at 2 mm—practical for doors and shower trays. However, the subfloor must be level, dry, and smoothed with leveling compound.
Rigid click vinyl with an SPC core is faster to install and bridges standard tile joints. In the bathroom, you seal the edges against walls, bathtubs, and shower trays with silicone and wipe up puddles promptly. Vinyl is not suitable for walk-in showers without professional-standard waterproofing.

Frequently asked questions about vinyl flooring in the bathroom
Is vinyl flooring suitable for the bathroom?
Yes. Vinyl does not absorb water, does not swell, and is warmer underfoot than tile. It is an excellent choice for standard bathroom areas outside the shower, provided the subfloor and edge seals are properly executed.
Click or glue-down for the bathroom?
Glue-down vinyl is usually the safer choice for the bathroom: it is fully bonded to the surface, leaving no click joints or cavities where water could seep in. Click vinyl with a rigid core also works, provided you seal the edges with silicone and wipe up puddles promptly.
Can I install vinyl over bathroom tiles?
Yes, this is one of the most common reasons for choosing vinyl in the bathroom. For glue-down vinyl, you must smooth out the joints with leveling compound first, otherwise, they will show through. Rigid click vinyl will bridge standard tile joints. Check the installation height at doors and shower trays beforehand.
Can I install vinyl flooring inside the shower?
In walk-in showers and areas subject to direct splashing, only with professional waterproofing compliant with DIN 18534, proper slope, and professional connection to the drain. This should be handled by a specialist. Vinyl is perfectly fine for the area around showers and tubs.
Is vinyl flooring in the bathroom slip-resistant?
Structured surfaces with wood or stone embossing provide grip even when barefoot and with wet feet. If slip resistance is particularly important to you, ask us about the R-rating of your preferred design; this can be found in the manufacturer's data sheet.
